This is a Juicy Lucy (sometimes stylized as Jucy Lucy) from Matt’s Bar in Minneapolis. When I tell people where I grew up I sometimes get asked what things, or, more specifically, what foods Minnesota is known for. Well. Juicy Lucys are the stuff of legend in Minneapolis. There is literally an entire episode of Man v. Food devoted to the concept of this burger, so I’ll try not to over explain it here. It’s a cheeseburger with the cheese on the inside. That’s it. This may not sound revolutionary, but it is. For every bite that you take of a Juicy Lucy, you get a mouthful of melted cheese with it.
I myself firmly believe that Matt’s Bar invented the Juicy Lucy. Anything calling itself a Juicy Lucy at any other restaurant — 5-8 Club, The Nook, The Blue Door Pub — is just a burger with cheese in the middle. Not to say that I haven’t eaten burgers at all of the aforementioned restaurants, because I have. But Matt’s is the real deal. I get mine with fried onions.
